Archery is a sport that has been around for thousands of years. It began as a way to hunt for food but with the advent of newer, more advanced weapons, archery is now used mostly for sport. Though it has taken a back seat to other types of hunting, the equipment used in the practice of archery has not been left behind with advances in technology. There are three main pieces of equipment necessary to practice archery. They are bows, arrows and a target. Though not a physical piece of equipment, the archers stance should also be considered a necessary part of archery.
First, let us take a look at the bow. In modern archery, there are three types of bows used. These are the long bow, the recurve bow and the compound bow. The long bow is most reminiscent of past bows, this is the easiest bow to work with and is great for beginners. The recurve bow and the compound bow both require more advanced skills and should only be utilized by the highly skilled shooter. What you use your bows for will have the biggest impact on which one you choose. You should decide whether you will be shooting for target practice, hunting, competition, etc. before looking into purchasing your first bow.
The next piece of equipment you will need are your arrows. There are arrows that are designed for multiple uses. These are ideal when you are just starting out and will be using them for target practice. If you will be game hunting, you will need a different type of arrow. The weight and speed of the arrow will vary depending on what material it is constructed from and its length. Do a bit of homework and talk to fellow archers before deciding on what arrows to purchase.
Finally, you will need a target. Without a specific target, you will have nothing to shoot at and gauge your improvement. It is advisable to purchase a target made for this, however you could make your own. Manufactured targets will allow you to better judge your accuracy, so you should begin with them if possible.
There are optional accessories that you may want further down the road. However, a bow, arrow and target will suffice when you are starting out. Learning the proper stance is extremely important and without it, the best equipment in the world will not make you a great shooter. Happy shooting!
