One would think that Los Angeles would be the perfect community to have tennis courts with their homes, especially for the rich. And, in a way, it is. It is a very social sport, where anywhere from 2 to 4 people can play. You can put a fence up and keep it protected from outsiders. You don't always have to change the water like you do a pool.
Yet, when you compare homes that have tennis courts to home that have wine cellars, wine cellars beats them out two to one. There are multiple reasons one might not decide to have a tennis court.
One reason is that, because the weather is fairly dry, tennis courts tend to crack and need a different type of maintenance than pools do. With a pool, you filter the water and add chlorine to it; with a tennis court, depending on what it's made of, you might have to repave it, or get materials to have someone patch up the cracks, or if the house has a grass court it also needs constant maintenance to keep it at a proper length, as well as watering. Watering would be the same with a clay court, though that's rare in the Los Angeles area.
Another reason is that house values don't grow as much by adding a court as they to a pool. Unless someone builds an indoor tennis court, very few outdoor courts add a wall where someone can go out and practice with themselves by hitting a ball against the wall. With a pool, even if they shouldn't, a person can get into it on their own without waiting for anyone else.
The final reason is that a tennis court is a tennis court. Other than colors, every tennis court has to look the same because of the rules. They can't be too big or too small; they always have to conform to the same specifications. With a pool, one can decide on any style they wish; circular, oval, straight lines, piano shaped (Liberace has that), hearts, moat; whatever an owner can think of, a pool can be built in that fashion, as big or as small as they wish.
Still, many celebrity homes have been built with tennis courts, because it does offer the opportunity to get some exercise and fun in with others. For instance, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith added a tennis court to their home so they could spend some more exercise time together. Of course, the Playboy mansion has tennis courts, more than one, although it's said he didn't play all that often, but loved inviting celebrities over to play on his courts.
Tommy Hilfiger built his house with a basketball court, pool and a tree lined tennis court, with the basketball court sharing space with the tennis court. It's also fenced in with a stone wall rather than the traditional chain link fence, which means the players had been keep any erratic play in check.
There are no special rules for where a tennis court should be, but most people keep them somewhat close to the house so they don't have to go far. And they don't have to be the standard green that most people associate with tennis courts either. Some are a clay color, some are blue, and there are even shades of yellow, gray, and orange that are sometimes available.
If you enjoy having company over and are looking for something relatively safe, yet still competitive, a house with a tennis court might be the perfect thing for you. Other than maintenance fees, it's not all that expensive a proposition.
