One day a young couple asked me what type of kitchen equipment they should buy. I asked them about their preferred cooking style, but they were not sure. Then I gave them some questions as below to determine what their preferred style is.

 

(These are some questions you need to ask yourself to determine style and kitchen equipment needs.)

 

What do they like to eat?

 

How much experience do you have cooking?

 

How much time do you have to devote to cooking your meals,and clean up?

 

Do you plan your meals or do you wing-it?

 

Do you plan your meals around what is on sale at the grocery store,or do you buy what ever you want?

 

Do all your family members sit down together to eat,or do they eat separately because of time restraints?

(after school activities, late meetings, traffic, and such.)

 

Are you limited to what equipment you have in your kitchen? (like oven,stove,microwave,grill and such.)

 

Do you cook from scratch or do you use convenient packaged product?

 

Do you do any bulk cooking on your day off so you can make meals for the whole week (convenience.)

 

Do you like to try different cooking styles or do you stick with what you know?

 

How much space do you have to store your cooking equipment?

 

Once you have evaluated your style of cooking you can begin to list your equipment needs prioritizing the most important like pots and pans and stock pots, to items you can get a little at a time right down to spoons, ladles, tongs, strainers, and items like that.

 

Try to really think about all the equipment that you will need so you don't forget anything.There are some other things to consider: can you buy a set of something to cover multiple needs and save money at the same time (like pot and pan sets,knife sets,utensil sets.). Also you want to educate yourself on what type of materials your equipment should be made of and the maintenance of such equipment.

 

Now that you know your style of cooking you can start to collect cookware to fit that style and add them to your collection.
