Presentation Skills. Advanced presentations skills for those at the front of the room. So when you stand to speak others take action.
Nothing more annoying to an audience in a presentation than repeated filler words. These are your âumsâ, âersâ, âuhsâ, âlikesâ, âyou knowâ, âI guessâ. These are sort of words that people throw in without considering the impact of those words. A lot of people in positions of authority donât have the âumsâ and âuhsâ. Theyâve learned to focus on getting rid of them, but they replace it with other words such as âyou knowâ or âI guessâ.
If youâre on stage, youâre in front of your audience whether it would be on a physical stage or simply around the desk or talking to your client on the phone and you are using filler words such as âI guessâ, âyou knowâ, âlikeâ, your level of authority and your position as a leader is going to be dropped. How do you get rid of these words? Well, itâs simple, the âno Nâ technique. When you're with a colleague, a trusted colleague or simply by yourself, practice for one minute speaking and talking in a normal conversation without using words beginning with the letter âNâ or ending with the letter âNâ. Now, what does that mean?
Say you and I, weâre going out to go to lunch. I couldnât say, âHey, letâs meet at noonâ because that begins and in this case ends with the letter N. I could say, âLetâs meet at 12 oâclock.â Instead of saying, âLetâs go nowâ that begins with N, weâd have to say, âLetâs leave right away.â
When you start speaking without any words beginning or ending with the letter N, what youâre doing is you're putting an additional filter into your speaking. What will happen is your thoughts will slow down, your speaking will slow down, and you will find those words simply disappear. It really is that easy.
