Caller ID (caller identification) is also known as CLID (calling line identification).  Quite popular in today’s technologically advanced world, caller ID is a means of digitally informing a caller as to who is calling their phone system.  Popularly and widely used throughout the United States and other countries, this information system allows the caller to choose whether or not to answer the phone based on who they see is calling.

The system idea was originally developed in Greece by Ted Paraskevakos who initiated the first identity display system for phone users.  Although he could not digitally create it at first, in the late nineteen seventies, the idea was technically brought to the table by Kazuo Hashimoto.  With over one thousand patents throughout the world, Hashimoto connected the idea to not only phone systems, but computer systems also.

In the late nineteen eighties Bell Atlantic (Verizon Communications) picked up the idea and began to market it to their customers.  It was not long before all of their call regions had the service available.

West Communications, now known as ‘Quest’, was not far behind Bell Atlantic in marketing the idea to their customers.  Quest was the third company to offer the function to their customers across the globe.  Customers were not only intrigued by the idea, but also believed that it would rid them of having to answer calls from telemarketers.  This new belief became the base for all caller identification marketing worldwide.

Telemarketing companies grew frustrated with their decrease in calls answered by potential clients.  The companies then began blocking their numbers and/or listing their numbers under ‘unknown’ names.  This way, there was a larger percentage of potential clients that ‘may’ pick up the phone not knowing who was on the other end of the line.

Other telemarketers have used means of caller ID to further enhance their marketing.  In posting their 800 phone numbers under titles such as ‘FREE MONEY’ or “FREE OFER’, they have now begun to entice potential customers to pick up the phone.

‘Blocking’ is also a common problem related to caller identification (Caller ID).  In being able to block an individual or company’s phone number from ethically being projected to the call recipient, callers can not see who is calling.  This ‘blocking’ method can be applied on a call-by-call basis.  Others see blocking as a means of protecting their phone number from being abused.  Those that wish to keep their information confidential may use this method on a regular basis.

Caller ID has come a long way from its mere beginning as just an idea. Now used by over ninety-five percent of the United States’ population, safe caller ID keeps telephone and computer users in the know as to who is attempting to contact them on a regular and ongoing basis.
